The short answer
Eye masks may help with jet lag indirectly. They block light, which can make planned sleep and darkness easier during a flight or at your destination. They do not reset your body clock by themselves, guarantee sleep or remove jet lag. The useful part is wearing one at the right time.
What can an eye mask actually do?
An ordinary sleep mask does one simple job: it reduces the light reaching your eyes. That can be useful when the cabin lights are on, your seatmate is watching a film or the hotel curtains admit an early sunrise.
Less light may make the setting easier to sleep in. Small trials and reviews have found better sleep measures when people used eye masks, sometimes with earplugs. But most of that research took place in hospitals or simulated intensive-care rooms—not on long-haul flights.
That limit matters. A mask can improve the opportunity for sleep without proving that it reduces jet lag after crossing time zones.
Sleep loss and jet lag are not the same problem
Jet lag comes from a mismatch between your body clock and the local day. A long flight can also leave you short of sleep. The two problems often arrive together, but an eye mask affects them in different ways.
- For lost sleep: blocking light may make a planned sleep window easier to use.
- For the body clock: darkness can help only when avoiding light suits the direction and timing of the shift.
A mask cannot tell your body whether it should move earlier or later. That depends on your usual sleep, the time zones crossed and when your eyes receive light.
When should you use an eye mask on the plane?
Use it when the trip plan calls for sleep or darkness and the cabin does not provide either. The CDC Yellow Book includes an eye mask and earplugs as possible aids for an in-flight nap, while also stressing that sleep and light should follow the destination plan.
Do not assume that every dark hour on a plane is a useful time to sleep. A sleep soon after takeoff may suit one route and work against another. Meal service, a connection and the time left before landing also decide whether the window is practical.
The mask helps create darkness. It does not make you sleep on command.
Can an eye mask make jet lag worse?
The mask itself is unlikely to be the problem. Poor timing can be. If it helps you take a long nap during the local day, you may find it harder to sleep that night. If you remain in darkness during a period when planned bright light would help move your body clock, you miss that light signal.
The CDC advises keeping daytime naps short after arrival because longer naps can interfere with local nighttime sleep. It also notes that timed light exposure or avoidance can help adaptation, with the useful timing changing by route.
What about the hotel?
A mask can be just as useful after landing. Hotel curtains leak, hallway light gets under the door and local sunrise may arrive before your planned wake time. CDC guidance for aircrew recommends eye masks as one way to reduce light when sleeping away from home.
Use the mask for the sleep you intend to protect. Take it off when the plan calls for waking and useful light. Staying in darkness because you still feel tired can keep you from getting the light planned for that part of the day.
What does the evidence prove?
The evidence is stronger for improving a dark sleep setting than for treating jet lag itself. A systematic review of non-drug jet lag measures found only 13 eligible travel studies. Nine found no significant benefit, three had mixed findings and one reported an overall benefit. The authors called for better trials that schedule both light and darkness before, during and after travel.
Research on eye masks is more encouraging but less direct. A review of mask and earplug studies in critical-care settings reported improvements in several sleep measures. One small randomised trial found better reported sleep effectiveness in a 17-person eye-mask group. Neither result tells us how much a mask changes jet lag for a healthy airline passenger.
How to choose and use one
- Choose a mask that blocks light around the nose without pressing painfully on your eyes.
- Test it at home before relying on it during a long flight.
- Pair it with earplugs or noise reduction if sound keeps you awake.
- Put it on for a planned sleep or dark period, not simply because the cabin dimmed its lights.
- Remove it when your plan calls for waking or bright light.
You do not need a costly or “jet lag” branded mask. Fit, comfort and light blocking matter more than a product claim.
How Offset treats the mask
Offset plans sleep and light around your usual sleep and every flight in the trip. An eye mask is one way to make a planned dark period more practical. It does not replace the timing.
Offset also does not know whether the mask helped you sleep. Planned cabin sleep counts for less than sleep on the ground, and the planner can leave room for more sleep after arrival when the flight cannot provide enough useful rest.
